Pope John Paul II greets the Rev. Joe Hale (right) during a January 2001 worship service at the St. Paul Outside the Walls Basilica in Rome. Hale, who retired later that year as top staff executive of the World Methodist Council, met with the pope many times over the years, as did other Methodist leaders. This photo was taken during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. A UMNS file photo courtesy of the World Methodist Council.
