Academy of Religion: A New Look at Jesus – and Ourselves

Wednesdays from October 4 to November 15, 2006, 7:30 - 9:30 p.m., led by Rev. Alan Bentz-Letts, Ph.D. – Recent biblical research has shown that the only title Jesus used to refer to himself was "son of man." What does this term mean and what impact does it have on the claim of Christian orthodoxy that Jesus is both human and divine? In this 7-week course we will read Walter Wink's ground-greaking study, The Human Being: Jesus and the Enigma of the Son of Man, and look at some key pasages in both the Jewish and Christian scriptures. The outcome may be a new way to look at Jesus and a better understanding of the divine potential carried within every woman and man. Registration (Fee, $50, which includes a copy of the book) must be made by September 26 to Alan Bentz-Letts, PO Box 670194, Flushing, NY 11367-0194. For more information, call (718) 380-7234 or alanbentzletts@aol.com.

Academy of Religion: The Search For What Saves Us

Wednesdays from Sept. 28 to Nov. 16, 2005, 7:30 - 9:30 p.m., led by Rev. Alan Bentz-Letts, Ph.D. – In their recent book, Proverbs of Ashes, leading Christian feminist theologians Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Ann Parker tell about their own journeys from violence and rootlessness to healing and wholeness. They also ask searching questions about the Christian doctrine that God saves us only because Jesus died an innocent death on the Cross. What does such a theory say about God? Is it Jesus’ violent death which saves us or the way he lived? Has this doctrine encouraged women (and others) to accept violence passively as the will of God? Join us for a provocative, 8-week series in which we will read the book, share from our lives, listen to audiotapes, and participate in ecumenical ritual and worship, led by Wendy Moscow. Click for details and contact information.
