☞ Loss Mitigation and Loan Modification

Who is eligible for what? This is not a guessing game. At this point the servicers are calling the shots, shifting blame to the elusive “investors,” and government is standing by and letting communities fall apart. People will get a clear understanding of what they can expect and decide on next steps. Reality is that many people will not be offered a sustainable loan modification within this current environment. Hence the need for serious advocacy and organizing.

☞ Foreclosure Legal Defense

The conventional foreclosure process within the current climate will be explained. We will lay out the new state law and what a pre-foreclosure notice and mandatory settlement conference is and what it means for homeowners behind/underwater in their mortgages. We will also identify the different types of legal resources that are available and obstacles within the courts and legal system.

☞ Advocacy and Organizing

We will explain how CHANGER’s plans for organizing to stabilize communities by fighting for the foreclosed properties that are being warehoused by the financial institutions. An explanation of structures and process within Wall Street will make it clear about a need for homeowners to advocate in smart and coordinated ways. Different means of advocating will also be identified for changing the environment in the courts and leveraging the role of government and specifically regulatory agencies (i.e. Attorney General, District Attorneys, Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission) on behalf of struggling homeowners.

CHANGER . . . is an education and advocacy project which will provide leadership for this Forum. You will learn about its Do Something: Free Legal Clinic for homeowners to address their foreclosure papers and provide tools and resources for homeowners to represent themselves. The Free Legal Clinic is available by appointment only; call 212-348-5249.
