The Family Federation in conjunction with the Women's Federation for World Peace is holding a "Cross Cultural Sisterhood Bridge of Peace Ceremony" under the theme, "Women's Role in Securing World Peace" at the Flushing Hospital, 45-00 Parsons Boulevard, Flushing, in honor of Women's Month. This program is a signature program of the Women's Federation and has been acclaimed by many, including President Clinton as a "Promising Practice" as part of his "One America in the 21st Century initiative. Why Christianity Must Change Or Die is the title of a provocative book by Bishop John Shelby Spong, retired Episcopal bishop of Newark, NJ., and of an 8-week course taught by the Rev. Allen Alan Bentz-Letts, Ph.D. It will meet in homes in Bayside on Wednesday evenings from April 19 to June 7 and will feature discussion of the book chapter by chapter, personal sharing, worship and prayer, and Bible study. The New York City Council Task Force on Hospital Closings will hold a Town Hall meeting at Queens Borough Hall, 120-55 Queens Boulevard, Kew Gardens, from 6 to 9 p.m. Governor Pataki formed a Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century (the “Berger Commission”) in order to make recommendations to reconfigure and close hospitals across New York State. The QFC will sponsor a forum on The Status of Our Immigrant Neighbors, to be held at the Grace Episcopal Parish House, 155-24 90th Avenue (corner of Parsons Boulevard), Jamaica. Information will be shared regarding the present immigrant laws along with a review of the various proposed changes and their impact on immigrants and refugees. Maria Sliwa will speak about the slavery situation in the South Sudan. For the past six years Maria Sliwa has devoted her full time efforts to raising awareness about modern-day slavery. Maria Sliwa is an active advocate for the oppressed in Africa --
particularly the women who have been made slaves in the Sudan. She has put her safety where her pen is and has been smuggled into the Sudan at great risk to herself to observe the conditions there (which turned out to be as horrible as she originally believed). Ruth Messinger, President of the American Jewish World Service, will be speaking about her trip to Darfur on a panel along with Sudanese refugee Daowd Salih and others. Brooklyn Loves Darfur Program at Brooklyn Borough Hall will feature speakers and performers; African Food and Music. The program will be Interfaith but with solid involvement of Muslims and Africans, including Darfurians from the Darfur Rehabilitation Coalition. Speakers will include Borough President Marty Markowitz; Imam Talib Abdur Rashid, Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood; Saikou Diallo of Ahmadou Diallo Foundation; Bishop Jeremiah Park, The United Methodist Church; Omar Mohammedi, NYC Human Rights Commissioner; Rabbi Bob Kaplan, JCRC; Sister Aisha Ad Dawiyya; Alladin, John Stompol of Human Rights First, and many, many more.

Film and Panel Discussion on Darfur at the Queens Museum in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Never Again: Again – Can We Learn from Suffering? will be shown, followed by a panel on Darfur and Human Rights issues which will include Manny Bekier, who grew up in an internment camp to become and advocate for Bosnia; the Rev. N. J. L'Heureux, Executive Director of the Queens Federation of Churches; and Ron Haviv, renowned photographer of Bosnia and other crises.

Thursday, September 14, 6 p.m.

An event to build commitment to the victims of the genocide in Darfur, to be held at Islamic Center of New York (96th Street at 3rd Ave), NYC's largest mosque influential both with UN and African communities. Imam Shamsi Ali and the Network of Arab American Professionals (NAAP) will sponsor this panel on Darfur including Darfurian from Darfur Rehabilitation as well John Hurwitz of Human Rights First.

SAVE DARFUR NOW: Voices to Stop Genocide – A Rally is planned in the East Meadow of Central Park to raise consciousness and protest the genocide in the Sudan. Click for details.

The Fall Assembly Meeting of the Queens Federation of Churches will be held at Faith Chapel, Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, 80-45 Winchester Boulevard, Queens Village. Homeowners Awareness Forum will be held in the Community House of Grace Episcopal Church, 155-24 90th Avenue (corner of Parsons Boulevard), Jamaica. Sponsored by the Queens Federation of Churches in cooperation with New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and a network of other nonprofit organizations. The Oratorio Society of Queens will sing choruses from Handel's Messiah along with traditional holiday music in its Annual Holiday Choral Concert which will be presented at the Performing Arts Center of Queensborough Community Cllege, 56th Avenue, one block east of Springfield Boulevard in Bayside. Holy Family of Fresh Meadows/Flushing will have our A Christmas Concert featuring both choirs of Holy Family Church will be held at the Church, 175-20 74th Avenue, Fresh Meadows (Utopia Parkway between the Grand Central Parkway and the LIE). The concert will be followed by a reception of free food and drink. Parking is available.

Eight performances of HIS LIFE, the epic musicial of Jesus' life, will be given at the Promise Theatre, 130-30 31st Avenue, Flushing. Since its opening in 1989, over 39 million people have experienced it through across the nation. The 2-hour production in New York will touch lives with the beauty of award-winning music and take viewers from the birth of Jesus to his resurrection and victorious ascension. Performances will be at 8 p.m. each evening Wednesday-Sunday and at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and Christmas Day. Tickets are $25 ($15 for children) and may be ordered online.
