Iraqi Church Leaders Call for End to Violence

May 12, 2010 – Recent violence in Iraq has led Iraqi church leaders to issue a statement calling on "all government officials and political parties in order to give priority to the public interest and the security of citizens." The statement, released Thursday 6 May, by the Council of the Christian Church Leaders of Iraq (CCCLI), came after an emergency meeting of the council in Qaraqosh. At the time the church leaders were responding to a 2 May attack in the northern city of Mosul, where buses carrying Christian university students travelling from the center of the district of Hamdaniya to the University of Mosul were bombed. One person was killed and some 188 men and women were injured, some seriously.

Humanitarian Agency Praises Senate Climate Bill Action, but Calls for Higher Bar
Church World Service Urges ‘More Ambitious Emissions Targets,'
Says ‘Too Little Adaptation Money Too Late' for Vulnerable Nations

May 13, 2010 WASHINGTON, D.C. – In reaction to yesterday's release of "The American Power Act" by Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), Rev. John L. McCullough, Executive Director and CEO of Church World Service, an international humanitarian organization, commended the senators for their hard work and a bill that "provides an initial step." But the agency called for "higher expectations" related to greenhouse gas emissions targets in earlier years and earlier commitment to adaptation funding for vulnerable nations. In a statement issued today, McCullough said, "I commend Senators Kerry and Lieberman for their hard work and leadership in bringing us legislation that addresses climate change and provides an initial step for the United States toward a more ecologically and economically sustainable future. Such a bill is vitally needed; indeed, it is overdue. Climate change is the moral challenge of our generation."

Update: Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Response Anticipated

May 11, 2010 – Three weeks after the April 20 explosion and fire on an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, a potentially devastating domino effect from the subsequent spill is looming larger with each passing day. A recent wind shift is slowly pushing more oil from BP's Deepwater Horizon gusher into the Mississippi Delta and areas west of the river, which is "bad news for Louisiana," Gov. Bobby Jindal said May 10. "The chaos is around still being in crisis mode," says Florence Coppola, the UCC's executive minister for Disaster Ministries. "People are preparing for what may happen. The fish and shrimp industries have shut down, of course, but this is going to have a huge economic impact on the people recovering from Hurricane Katrina just five years ago."

Taking the Pulse of the Ecumenical Movement

May 11, 2010 – Church ecumenical officers play a key role in the advancement of ecumenism at a time when resources are scarce and inward-looking tendencies thrive. "I regard you as the group that is closest to us in our daily work," the World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit told a gathering of church ecumenical officers on Tuesday, 4 May. A former ecumenical officer himself, Tveit emphasized the crucial relevance of the ecumenical officers' work: "Serving the churches in their response to the call to seek Christian unity, nurturing opportunities for the churches to be one in faith, prayer and service, encouraging their witness for justice and peace – these are indeed huge tasks, sometimes quite demanding."

Arizona: Episcopalians Assess Implications of Immigration Law
Tough Measure Makes the ‘Already Desperate More Desperate and Fearful,' Priest Says

May 13, 2010 – The Rev. Canon Carmen B. Guerrero remembers living with the fear of her mother, a third-generation Mexican American, "who would never go close to the border because she was afraid of getting deported, although she had been born here." For Guerrero, canon for peace and justice in the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona, the state's tough anti-illegal immigration law feels a bit like déjà vu. Guerrero described suffering of her parishioners because of the immigration debacle. An undocumented woman in her congregation, identified only as "Señora," received news her mother was ill and went to Mexico for a visit, leaving behind two young children, Guerrero said.

Church Affiliated Senior Home Makes Seniors' Lives Happier and Healthier

May 9, 2010 – "In the past decade, we've had 193 residents come to us asking to be baptized and become Christians," said Rev. Tai Yue-shin from Suan-Lien Elderly Center during a recent forum on soul care and outreach for seniors. He added that churches planning to minister to seniors by running a senior home must shape this ministry around physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of seniors, and, most importantly, must display genuine care and interest in seniors. Recent surveys indicate that though there are a lot of seniors in Taiwan in need of professional care, the number of senior homes isn't keeping up with the number of seniors in this aging society.

Roundtable Explores Churches Role in Internet Technology Use

May 13, 2010 – Churches are among the few institutions in American life where different generations meet, says the Rev. Deirdre Hainsworth of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. In a society increasingly Balkanized by technology, faith communities may have a unique contribution to make when building community on the Internet. Hainsworth, an ordained UCC minister, spoke April 30 at the 2010 Ecumenical Roundtable on Faith, Science and Technology at the UCC's Church House in Cleveland. Her paper focused on the value of "inquiry" as a method both for science and the church as it tackles social and scientific issues. "Inquiry is basic to Christian understandings of human life in relationship with God," she said.

Editorial: as Bow Is to Arrow, So Is Mother to Child

May 9, 2010 – Carnations in May remind us to express gratitude to all mothers on earth. Every woman takes on countless responsibilities and makes innumerable sacrifices from the moment she delivers her baby after ten months of pregnancy. A lot of tears and sweat are included in the process of raising a child and motherhood is a lifetime responsibility. Perhaps modern women no longer see serving their husbands and children as the center of their lives. Many women nowadays have gone on to pursue self-realization and prestigious careers on top of starting a family.
