The Queens Federation of Churches Spring Choir Festival will be held at 4:30 p.m. at Faith Chapel on the grounds of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, Queens Village. Choirs need to register by April 8 for performance. Information and choir registration is available online here.

The New York Buddhist Vihara Temple will host a community blood drive at 214-22 Spencer Avenue, Queens Village. Healthy individuals are encouraged to donate blood between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The Old Organist (a play) will be presented at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 10-08 49th Avenue, Long Island City at 5 p.m. Dr. Rollin Smith, who resurrected the play from obscurity, will discuss the work. Msgr. Mulqueen, Associate Pastor of St. Mary’s, is directing the performance of the work. Period organ literature/transcriptions will be rendered as part of the event. Those who bring food/beverages are invited to join us for a Pot luck Dinner following the program. If you plan to bring food or beverage- enough for you and 5 other people- please contact Mr. Robert Vogel at winningbyrd@yahoo.com, to let him know what you are food/beverage you are bringing. The church parking lot is located on 49th Avenue across from the school. 49th Avenue runs east from Vernon Boulevard. A free-will offering will be taken at the event. The Old Organist, written by Henry Jones (1851-1929), is a domestic drama/comedy which finds a venerable blind organist terminated after 25 years service due to his “innocently priming himself” with drink before playing his service voluntaries. He is, without knowing it, succeeded by his daughter’s fiancé and their conversations provide part of the play’s comedy. Dr. Rollin Smith director of publications for the Organ Historical Society and editor of its quarterly journal, The Tracker, as well as. He is the author of ten books, more than one hundred articles and essays on organ performance; a contributor to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians; and organ editor for Dover Publications. As a concert organist he has played throughout the United States, and appeared at national conventions of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society, and the American Liszt Society. He studied in Paris with Jean Langlais and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Juilliard School.
