January 2010

January 1 – New Years Day

Thursday, January 14 – 6 p.m.

A preview screening and panel discussion entitled "Fighting for Justice: New York Voices of the Civil Rights Movement" will be held on Thursday January 14, from 6-8 p.m. at the APOLLO Theater, 253 West 125th Street, Manhattan. The panel will included two of the many influential New York voices featured in the video that have made significant contributions to the civil rights movement. Monday, January 18 – Martin Luther King Day

Monday, January 18 – 9 a.m.

A day-long series of musical workshops commences at 9 AM at the Community Church of Douglaston, 39-50 Douglaston Parkway, Douglaston, co-sponsored by the Suffolk, Nassau, and Queens Chapters of the American Guild of Organists. Topics include: handbell choirs, children's choir techniques and repertoire, accessible organ repertoire, denominational subbing, organ master-class on Schumann and Mendelssohn, tips on managing performance anxiety, a choral reading, and an organ recital at day's end. Registration: $30 for Suffolk, Queens, and Nassau Chapter members. $40 all others, when received by January 10. After January 10, register at the door for an additional $10. Registration fee includes a full day of workshops, choral reading, and organ recital; morning coffee and bagels; catered lunch of soup, salad, assorted sandwiches, pasta, and beverages; choral reading packet of music; not to mention the chance to pick up some new ideas, find solutions to old problems, and beat the mid-winter doldrums by visiting with friends and colleagues! Friday, January 29 – 6 p.m.

Celebration of 79 Years of Ecumenical Ministry in Queens at Terrace On The Park. The Annual Dinner Celebration of the Queens Federation of Church will feature a reception at 6 p.m. followed by a Dinner (at 7 p.m.) during which annual awards for Outstanding Leadership in Queens will be presented. The annual Bishop Wright Air Industry Awards Luncheon will be held at Russo's on the Bay, honoring Gail Grimmett (Senior VP of Delta Air Lines) and Warren D. Kroeppel (General Manager of LaGuardia Airport). The Luncheon is sponsored by Christ for the World Chapel at JFK International Airport, a ministry of the Council of Churches of the City of New York. May 2010

Saturday, May 1 - 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Come Paint with World Faith! A fun-filled day of interfaith painting and informal mentoring to the students of Richmond Hill High School, 89-30 114th Street, Richmond Hill (111th Street stop on the J train), sponsored by World Faith in association with Publicolor. Human Rights Conference focusing on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the issue of Human Trafficking will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 108th Street at 86th Avenue, Richmond Hill, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration opens at 9 a.m. The Conference is sponsored by the Queens Federation of Churches to bring attention to global and domestic issues is security human rights for all of God's children. Sunday, May 16 – 4:30 p.m.

Spring Choir Festival, sponsored by the Queens Federation of Churches and the Queens Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. It will be held at Faith Chapel, 80-45 Winchester Boulevard, Queens Village (on the grounds of the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center). Choirs and church musical groups are invited to register by the deadline of April 26 to perform on May 16. Click here for more information.

Church Accounting and Record Keeping Workshop, sponsored by the Queens Federation of Churches, will be held at First Reformed Church of Jamaica, 159-29 90th Avenue, Jamaica, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration opens at 9 a.m. This is designed for Church Treasurers, Pastors, Trustees and other leaders responsible for financial record keeping and decision making in the congregation. Registration is $10 per person; $25 for three or more from a congregation when registered together

The 2010 Annual Awards Banquet of the Council of Churches of the City of New York will be held in the Grand Ballroom of St. Vartan's Cathedral, Second Avenue and 35th Street, Manhattan. Click here for information.

Saturday, October 30 – 11 a.m.

The Queens Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and the Community Church of Douglaston (39-50 Douglaston Parkway) are sponsoring a family event titled "Pedals, Pipes, Pumpkins, and Pizza" on Saturday, October 30, from 11 a.m. to noon. The program is a way to introduce young people to the organ. The workshop includes the Toccata and Fugue in d minor; "Rex, The King of Instruments" (piece for organ and narrator that explains the different sounds and capabilities of the organ to elementary and young middle school students) and the "Stars and Stripes" for three organists. Three young students will play their short piano pieces on the organ and we hope to have other kids performing as well. Pizza and soda will be served after the venue. The program is FREE for children in Halloween costumes and $5.00 for others. Please make a reservation by calling 718-229-2169. November 2010

Sunday, November 14 – 5 p.m.

The Fall Assembly Meeting of the Queens Federation of Churches will be held at Faith Chapel, Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, 80-45 Winchester Boulevard, Queens Village. The annual business meeting will convene at 5 p.m., followed by a buffet supper and, at 7:30 p.m. an ecumenical Celebration of Ministry in the Chapel. Click here to register.

28th Annual Scouting Awards Dinner featuring the presention of the Shepherd Emblem and the Interfaith Leadership Awards to adult leaders with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. JFK Annual Christmas Concert sponsored by Christ for the World Chapel will be held on the 3rd floor of JFK International Arrivals Terminal 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. Church choirs and musical groups will perform during the afternoon.
