January 2008

January 1 – New Years Day

Saturday, January 5, 4 p.m.

Three Kings Day Toy Distribution to children will be held at St. George's Episcaopal Church, 14th Street and 27th Avenue, Astoria, sponsored by the Queens Federation of Churches, St. Peter & St. Paul Lutheran Church, Church of Scientology New York, St. George's Episcopal Church, and the Ecuador News. Children are invited to come and receive toys from the Three Kings.

Friday, January 11, 12:30 to 2 p.m.

An Interfaith Prayers and Vigil to End Torture, at Foley Square (Pearl & Centre Streets, Manhattan) will commemorate six years of boys and men being thrown into Guantánamo Prison and an opportunity to Say, “NO MORE!” to Indefinite Detentions, to Inhumane & Degrading Treatment, to Lack of Fair Trials, and to Torture. Juma will be led, on site, by Imam Talib Abdur Rashid at 12:30 p.m. Interfaith Prayers & Vigil will follow from 1 to 2 p.m. For more information, click here or contact Fr. Sunday, January 13 – 12 noon to 4 p.m.

New Coats for Women and Children are needed. They will be presented to families living in Shelters at an Interfaith Luncheon sponsored by the Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing, Islamic Circle of North America Relief USA, and the Queens Federation of Churches, which will be held at ICNA Relief Headquarters. New coats for women and children may be dropped off before January 13, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the ICNA Relief Headquarters, 166-26 89th Avenue, Jamaica, NY. Sunday, April 13 – Ecumenical Scout Recognition Luncheon

Scout who have earned religious awards during the past year will be honored at an Ecumenical Luncheon sponsored by the Queens Federation of Churches Committee on Scouting and Youth Mnistry, the Luncheon will be held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 196-10 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, at 12:30 p.m. Reservations at $6 per person may be made online.

Wednesday, April 16 – Bishop Wright Awards Luncheon

Christ for the World Chapel at JFK Airport will honor Susan Baer, General Manager of JFK Airport, and Donald Wright, VP North American Operations for All Nippon Airways, at the annual Bishop Wright Air Industry Awards Luncheon held at Russo's on the Bay, 11:30 a.m. Reservations and Journal Advertising may be ordered online.

Saturday, April 26 – Spring Choir Festival

The Queens Federation of Churches will sponsor its first Spring Choir Festival, featuring church choirs, liturgical dance and other musical groups. It will be held at New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 122-05 Smith Street (at Baisley Boulevard, one block east of Guy R. Brewer Boulevard), Jamaica. Tickets at $20 (Children under 12, $10) may be purchased online

Saturday, June 7, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A Communities of Faith Homeownership Conference designed to help families and communities create a plan to become homeowners and/or to sustain the homes that they are in. Pastor Shirley Caesar will be the keynote speaker. This half day event will include educational sessions focused on "First-Time Homebuyer Education" and "Homeowner Foreclosure Intervention and Prevention.” This free public event will be held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel at the JFK Airport. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Workshops are from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The conference is sponsored by Citibank, Genworth Financial, Freddie Mac, NHS, and the Queens Federation of Churches. An Interfaith Rally in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Right will feature speakers from different faiths at 4:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by Youth for Human Rights International and is being held in junction with its 5th annual Human Right Summit at the United Nations.

 

October 2008

The 16th presentation of the Citation for Faithful Service will be made by the Queens Federation of Churches at its annual Ecumenical Luncheon which will be held at the New York Presbyterian Church, 43-23 37th Avenue, Long Island City. Click here for information and to register online.

 

November 2008

Sunday, November 9, 5 p.m.

The Fall Assembly Meeting of the Queens Federation of Churches will be held at Faith Chapel, Creedmoor Psychiatric Center, 80-45 Winchester Boulevard, Queens Village. The annual business meeting will convene at 5 p.m., followed by a buffet supper and, at 7:30 p.m. an ecumenical Celebration of Ministry in the Chapel. Click here to register.

27th Annual Scouting Awards Dinner featuring the presention of the Shepherd Emblem and the Interfaith Leadership Awards to adult leaders with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Applying for Federal Funding: Preparing Grant Proposals – an all-day workshop sponsored by the Queens Federation of Churches, the New York Federal Partners Council and the Faith Based and Community Initiative Subcommittee – will be hosted by the First Reformed Church of Jamaica, 159-29 90th Avenue, Jamaica. It will be facilitated by representatives of the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Health and Human Services. Registration is required by December 5. Thursday, December 11 – 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Dealing with the Foreclosure Crisis – a Queens Federation Forum in cooperation with CHANGER – will be presented at the Grace Episcopal Church Parish House, 155-24 90th Avenue, Jamaica, at 7 to 8:30 p.m. The workshop is intended for Pastors, Counselors and other Advocates – as well as persons who are ensnared in the Foreclosure Crisis.
