January 2007

January 1 – New Year's Day

Monday, January 15, 9 a.m.

The Queens Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will hold a one-day Mini-Convention at the Community Church of Douglaston, 39-50 Douglaston Parkway, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Throughout the day, there will be various workshop and training opportunity for church musicians. At 3:30 p.m., an Organ Recital will conclude the event. Registration is $20 ($10 for AGO members). Click for more information.

Friday, January 26, 6 p.m.

The Celebration of 76 years of Ecumenical Ministry in Queens will be held at Terrace On The Park. Individuals will be honored with the awards for Outstanding Leadership in Queens, the Grant F. Anderson Citation for Meritorious Ministry, and the Adults Scout Leader of the Year Award. Click here for information and to make reservations.

A Capacity Building Grant Workshop for Faith-based and Community-based Organizations will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Jamaica, 91- 164th Street, Jamaica. The Compassion Capital Fund Targeted Capacity Building Program, a federal grant program for faith-based and community-based organizations that serve distressed communities, will provide one-time grants of up to $50,000 to help new and emerging organizations build their capacity. More than 300 grants are expected to be awarded this year. Federal representatives will also provide information about other grant programs and capacity building resources. First Presbyterian Church of Jamaica, organized in 1662, is the oldest continually worshipping Presbyterian congregation in the United States. The congregation will celebrate its 345th anniversary with a Gala at Terrace on the Park. Honorees are Michael Gecan, Metro NY Industrial Areas Foundation; Rev. N. J. The Beck Institute on Religion and Poverty of the Graduate School of Social Service at Fordham Univeristy will be sponsoring an all-day conference on "Celebrating Faith in Action – The Religious Community's Response to the Challenge of Poverty: What Works." It will be held in the McNally Auditorium at the Lincoln Center Campus of the Fordham Graduate School of Social Service. Keynote addresses will be given by Dr. John P. Kretzmann, Northwestern University, Rev. Dr. J. Bryan Hehir, Harvard University, and Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr., The Riverside Church, NY, NY. "Relief of Suffering: The Noble Mandate" is the theme of an interdenominational Clergy Luncheon sponsored by the Queens County Psychiatric Society and the Academy of Medicine of Queens County. It will be held at in the Atrium of the Holliswood Hospital, 87-37 Palermo Street. Holliswood. Dr. James A. Avery, Senior Medical Director, VNSNY Hospice Care, will speak. The Council of Churches of the City of New York will host Dr. David Yonggi Cho's "Revitalizing Your Life and Ministry Conference: Taking Big Positive Steps" at the Marble Collegiate Church, 5th Avenue at 29th Street, Manhattan. Speakers will include the Rev. Dr. Joshua Hong, President, Institute for Church Growth; Rev. Dr. Dale Irwin, President, NY Theological Seminary; Rev. LaGuardia Community College will host an "Action Forum and Dinner" for participants in the year-long Difficult Dialogues Project. It will be an opportunity to meet some of the 100 people who have been a part of the month-long conversation circles, to talk about learnings, and share any ideas for actions that may improve our community as a place that welcomes and respects people from all faith perspectives. LaGuardia Community College will host the culminating event to celebrate its year-long Difficult Dialogues Project with food, music, and discussion. Beginning at 2 p.m., the three components of the Project – Faculty, Students, and Community Participants – report on their progress. The afternoon begins with a keynote by Dr. R. Scott Hanson, an historian whose book on religious diversity in Flushing (City of Gods) will be published by Oxford University Press and become the basis of a

The Queens Chapter of the American Guild of Organists concludes its 50th Anniversary Season with a special Service featuring Dr. David Hurd playing “Arioso & Finale” and conducting “Andujar,” the World Premiere of an anthem commissioned for our Anniversary season by Dr. Bruce Saylor. The text is based upon Psalm 150. An Address will be given by AGO Executive Director Mr. James Thomashower. The Service, which is open to the public, will be held at the Community Church of Douglaston, 39-50 Douglaston Parkway in Douglaston.
