Historic events of courage by the townspeople of Flushing on December 27, 1657, in defying religious bigotry ordered by Governor Peter Stuyvessant (and in suffering his reprisals) laid the foundation for the principle of universal religious freedom enshrined in the American Declaration of Independence and, especially, as the first freedom in our Bill of Rights. Their statement to the Governor – the Flushing Remonstrance – is the first declaration on these shores where one people asserted religious freedom not just for themselves, but for others!
This program will feature the present condition of religious liberty today – its success and its struggles – which are laid on the important foundation provided by our forebears here in Queens.
