Adult Scout Leaders of the Year
2017 Honorees of the Queens Federation of Churches
Aleena & Bill Knight
Although Bill was involved with scouting as a youngster (Tiger & Bear), the Knights true adventures with the Scouting program began in 2005 when their son William joined Pack 96, in Forest Hills, as a Tiger Cub. As Parent Volunteers, their goal was to support the Pack based on the principals and benefits of what Baden Powell’s mission was to develop and nurture young boys into becoming Youth Leaders.
At the end of 2006, they relocated to Tokyo, Japan, and joined the Far East Council Scouting program, sponsored by the Tokyo American Club (“TAC”). Although in a foreign country, William had the opportunity to continue in Scouting, joining Pack 51 and later crossed over to the Troop. During their time in Japan, the scouting experience was phenomenal, with a very strong focus on outdoor activities, (e.g. Annual Mt. Fuji Hike,, Snow Cave Winter Camping, Wild River Rafting, 50 Mile Beach Bike & Camp, etc.). It demonstrated that a strong program is successful by the amount of dedication, sacrifice and willingness of an Adult Volunteer.
The Knights’ enthusiasm for scouting grew significantly and, as a result, they engaged in leadership roles (Den, Webelos/2, Assistant Scoutmaster, Committee Member, Treasurer) which helped with the programs’ huge success, as their son progressed through the ranks of Cub and Boy Scouts. Upon their return to New York in 2010, they “re-enlisted” with Troop 96 Forest Hills in various leadership roles, educating and promoting the principals of a “Boys-led Troop,” the meaning of “Leadership,” and the important values of Scouting. This past June, their son William achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and with that, reaffirmed a life-long commitment to scouting as they continue in their current capacities of Unit and District Commissioners, Assistant Scout Master and membership/participation in other District and Council level programs.
Currently, the Knights have joined GNYC in promoting Scouting within the Islamic Communities and the Pathfinder District. Their association with Masjid Al Abidin and Masjid, Masjid Ar-Rahman in Queens have led them to believe that there is room to grow the program in areas that could lead to a larger base of youths who are currently missing out on the opportunity of being effective leaders in our society.
