Adult Scout Leader of the Year
2016 Honoree of the Queens Federation of Churches

Cathleen Shannon King

Cathleen Shannon was born and raised in College Point by her parents, Lucie and Charlie (Biff) Shannon. Both very civic minded individuals who were always involved in the community, including parade committees, church events, the VFW, the Masons, the Knights of Columbus, but the thing that affected Cathleen the most, Girl Scouts. Both parents were Girl Scout Leaders – at that time, very few men were Girl Scout Leaders and her dad was one of the exceptions. And long after she and her sisters were taking a sabbatical from Girl Scouts and other community events. their parents were still hitting the camp grounds and made a difference.

Cathleen reentered the Scouting world via her daughter who loved being a Girl Scout. She was 5 and the cutest Daisy, she ever laid eyes on. However, she was a sleepwalker and extremely shy, therefore, Cathleen decided that if her daughter were going to have the full Girl Scout experience she would have to be totally involved herself. That was 6 years ago and that Daisy is now a Cadette - and no longer in her Mother’s Brownie troop.

Over the last 6 years, not only did Cathleen realize how important it was to volunteer time as a Scout Leader, she learned how important it is to be civic minded. Therefore, she leads her Scouts in that direction with various community service projects: waterfront cleanups, visits to the nursing homes, marching in parades to honor our Veterans, food drives, making holiday cards for the nursing home residents and our active soldiers, etc. and that's just since October. It always amazing how much these little people love to help and what big hearts they have.

Cathleen continues to do her civic duties leading by example with a smile knowing that it benefits her just as much.
