Adult Scout Leaders of the Year
2013 Honoree of the Queens Federation of Churches
John & Lynn Sammon
John Sammon has a love for scouting that started when he was a Wolf Cub Scout in Pack 403 that was based in Trinity Lutheran Church in Astoria. He earned his Parvuli Dei Religious award as a Bear scout. He earned his Arrow of Light as a Webelos scout then carried on as a Boy Scout in Troop 403. John received his Eagle rank June 9, 1979 at the age of 16.
After finishing high school, college and raising his family, John came back to scouting through the interest of his youngest son, John William. First helping out Pack 312s pinewood derby then filling in as the Wolf leader brought back many great memories from his childhood. That was all it took to have John step up the following year as the Webelos leader. He and his wife Lynn decided to stay with the pack after their son moved up to Boy Scouts. This decision was based on the idea that the boys needed leaders with experience since the rest of the leaders moved up with their sons. In 2010 John became the Cubmaster for Pack 312 and he enjoys every moment. He has made Pack 312 one of the strongest packs in GNYC.
John spends many of his weekends as a campmaster for Alpine Scout Camp helping visiting units enjoy their stay. He is also an archery instructor for the camp.
John was the membership chairman for Pathfinder District from 2009 to 2012. He is a member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting. He is the training chairman for Pathfinder district and a member of the Owls training team in Founders district.
One of John’s great loves is being a Leave No Trace Master Educator traveling all over the tri-state area giving lectures and teaching both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts the principles of Leave No Trace and how to leave less of an impact while camping.
Each year John makes sure all the scouts in his pack earn the religious award irrespective of their faith. He is a Ad Altari Dei counselor for the Catholic faith. He was awarded the District Award of Merit in June 2011 and received his Pelican Award in 2012. John has recently founded Venturing Crew 312 and is looking forward to a continued bright future in scouting.
Lynn Sammon became a Girl Scout in 1976 when she moved to Ridgewood. She joined as a Junior Scout in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and continued in Girl Scouting until she became Senior Scout. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout and hoped that herchildren would be interested in Scouting. She enjoyed the meetings and skills that she learned being a Scout.
In 2006 her youngest son joined Pack 312 in Maspeth as a Wolf and she became an Assistant Den Leader. From there she became the Committee Chair and the Bear Den Leader from 2007 to present. When her son crossed over to the Troop, she stayed in the Pack because she enjoyed working with the kids and enjoys watching them learn and share their new skills with each other.
Lynn also became active within her district by becoming a Unit Commissioner, joining the Pathfinder District Activities Committee and both the Pathfinder and Founders District Training Committees. She is also a member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Brooklyn/Queens Diocese. She and her husband John both co-chaired the Ten Commandments Hike in 2011 that is sponsored by the Queens Ecumenical Committee of Scouting. Lynn received the Bronze Pelican Award this September. She most recently became the Membership Chair for the Pathfinder District.
She enjoys the time she spends helping others keep the Boy Scout program strong in her community.
