Adult Scout Leader of the Year
2011 Honoree of the Queens Federation of Churches
Amy Shapiro
Amy Shapiro was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, not far from a Scout shop. Raised close to the source of the Mississippi River, this is where she honed her outdoor skills – thanks to time spent with her parents in the fine art of cutting firewood, fishing and fun. Before becoming a “cheerleader” for scouting, she was in fact a high school cheerleader.
Her early professional career included performing as Ernie in the original touring company of Sesame Street Live. In addition to playing Ernie, she thrilled young and old, around the country as Clifford, Daffy Duck, Snoopy and Garfield. She has performed across the country in children’s festivals, fairs, special events and mall promotions. Anyone who can play “Daffy” is destined to be a great Scouter.
Her involvement in Queens scouting started with Cub Pack 96. From her very first day, she shared her talents and demonstrated scout spirit as an active Tiger Cub partner. As her sons progressed through the ranks, she was elected a Wolf, Bear and Webelo Den Leader, as well as an Assistant Cubmaster. She moved on to the troop and became an active Troop 96 Committee Member and eventually an Assistant Scoutmaster, accompanying the troop to TMR Summer Camp on a regular basis. She also accompanied the Troop on a spectacular high adventure canoe trek at the Atikokan Base of the BSA Northern Tier program.
She is a founding member of Venturing Crew 2096 which includes co-ed youth ages 14-21 and currently serves as Crew Advisor. She joins her Crew in their activities and trips, including ski trips, camping trips and community service initiatives. She is active with the Queens Council Venturing Committee, and has served on staff for Venturing sessions at the annual GNYC Training Extravaganzas and regularly attends huddles and council activities with her unit.
On the district level, she has been a Chairperson of the Membership Committee, and currently serves on the Queens Council Membership Committee. She is a highly-regarded Pathfinder District Commissioner, with direct responsibility for creative Cub Roundtables.
She is also an active member of the Israel Center of Conservative Judaism in Fresh Meadows where, in addition to her spiritual contributions, she has served as a member of the Youth Activities committee, has been a long-standing member of their Koleinu Choir and is currently a Board of Trustees Member. She was instrumental in the development of their community sports and pool program, which currently offers classes in swimming, self-defense, dance and various sports that serves over 350 local Jewish community youth.
She was inducted into Suanhacky Lodge of the Order of the Arrow in 2006 and sealed her brotherhood in 2007. A member of the Ecumenical Youth and Scouting Ministry Committee of the Queens Federation of Churches, she is proud to have received the Interfaith Leadership Award and strives to continue to promote religious awards and participation among scouts. She has also received the Pathfinder Scouter Award, New Unit Award, Venturing Corps of Discovery Award, Venturing Leadership Award, District Award of Merit in 2008 and the Silver Beaver Award in 2009.
Amy is the proud mother of an Eagle scout and CEO in-training. Amy is a 15-year veteran at United Healthcare where she currently is a Strategic Account Executive, specializing in corporate accounts.
