Adult Scout Leader of the Year
2008 Honoree of the Queens Federation of Churches
Theresa Walker-Greer
Theresa Walker-Greer was born in Jamaica, NY. Theresa was educated at St. Pius in Queens, St. Joseph’s in Brooklyn, and Andrew Jackson HS, where she graduated in 1973 with honors. She went on to Marist College in Poughkeepsie, and continued her education in Minnesota and New Mexico in the fields of Special Education, Child psychology, becoming an advocate for Special Ed Children.
Theresa has been in Scouting for 44 years, 10 as a Girl Scout and 34 as a Scout Leader. Theresa became a Girl Scout in 1964 in Brooklyn. Becoming a Senior Girl Scout in Cambria Heights five years later ignited her passion for Scouting. At 19, she started her first Troop at Sacred Heart School in Cambria Heights, as a Junior Leader. She left NY in 1975 to see the world and start her family. But wherever she was, she was always in Scouting as a leader of Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She started the first special needs Cub Scout Troop in Sumter, SC, seeing a need for special little boys to have scouting. In Albuquerque, she became a Boy Scout Leader so that her sons could continue scouting.
When she returned to NY in 1993 with her sons on the way to adulthood, it was time for her daughters. She found a troop at Friendly Apostolic Church, where she was a parent volunteer. It didn’t take long for someone to find out that she was a GS Leader, and she was asked to become head Leader for over 25 girls. From there she has started many new troops. In 2002 Theresa and a co-Leader took 27 girls and 10 adults to Savannah to see the birth place of GS Founder Juliette Gorden Low. At this present time Theresa and another leader are putting together a trip to Europe for August 2008. Theresa works hard to teach her girls the value of self esteem and knowing they can be whatever they set there goals on. As a Scout, Theresa has received many awards in Scouting including the Skyline Award, Leadership Development Pin, Outstanding Leader and Appreciation Pin.
Theresa wears many hats in Scouting and in her community. In Scouting she is first and foremost the Cadet and Senior Leader at Brooks Memorial Church, Service Unit Manager for EQ4, Council Trainer, Out Door Trainer, Sight Director, Scholars Support Team, and Recognition Comity. In her community she is PTA President at York Early College Academy, Treasurer at The School of Moon and Water of Marshal Arts, Owner, Director and Teacher at Mother Theresa’s Family Day Care. The proudest accomplishment of all is that Theresa and Gary (her husband) are the proud parents of 10 children – 6 boys, 4 girls – and yes, she has truly earned the name “Mother Theresa.”
