Adult Scout Leader of the Year
2007 Honoree of the Queens Federation of Churches

Evelyn M. Fleischman

Evelyn Fleischman entered the Church Triumphant on June 10, 2006, after a service-filled lifetime of 89 years.

She made her home for over 60 years in Jamaica where, since 1949, she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Jamaica, an active, inclusive, multi-ethnic Church. For many years she taught Sunday School, served as Superintendent of the Sunday School and Chair of the Commission on Education. She was an active member, past President, and treasurer of the local United Methodist Women unit and an officer of the Long Island West District UMW for 8 years, a member of the Administrative Council, Worship Committee and served as Food Coordinator for the Community Food Distribution for First Church.

Membership in Church Women United provided relationships with women of different denominations and races, enabling growth in understanding—the World Day of Prayer, May Fellowship Day, World Community Day and the Spring Assembly. She also served the Federation's Emergency Food Program, the homeless through the Star of the Sea Residence, and the youth through the New Life in Queens.

Evelyn worked with the Queens Coordinating Committee of Church Women United as a liaison representative of the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York and the Protestant Service Organization at Creedmoor. She served as a Girl Scout leader, District chairman, Borough Chairman, a member of the Board of Directors and as the Queens Borough Coordinator for the Training Calendar for leaders. In 1991, she was awarded the highest honor for an adult scout, the Thanks II Badge.

Since 1969 and until her death, she had been a board member of the Protestant Service Organization at Creedmoor, dedicated to making life for the residents more pleasant and comfortable. Religious services are held at Faith Chapel, as well as social hours on Wednesdays and Ward parties. She was also a member of the Creedmoor Chapel Commission.

Evelyn has twice previously been recognized by the Queens Federation of Churches – in January 1994 with the Grant F. Anderson Citation for Meritorious Ministry and again in October 1997 with the Citation for Faithful Service.
