Outstanding Leadership in Queens
2002 Honoree of the Queens Federation of Churches
Jack Thompson
Jack Thompson is President of the Cambria Heights
Civic Association, the longest continuous operating Civic Association in
Queens, organized in 1932. Mr. Thompson established himself as a concerned,
dedicated, determined community activist some twenty years ago. His willingness
to devote his time, energy and efforts to assist, inform and include community
residents in issues directly affecting the community, has resulted in Cambria
Heights maintaining its dignity, grace, high morale and aesthetic charm.
Mr. Thompson is an active member of several advisory
boards including the Human Resources Administration (HRA), U.S. Postal
Service, Universal Pre-K, Verizon and Jamaica Hospital, to name a few.
He is an honorary member of the Cambria Heights Kiwanis Club and was one
of the founders of the Southeast Queens Community Partnership. As a lobbyist,
Mr. Thompson has traveled to Albany on many occasions to fight for equal
education funding for all children and better health care for everyone.
Mr. Thompson has been recognized with many Awards;
among them are the HAUP Community Service Award, The Real Action Program
Award, The Eastern Queens Alliance Community Service Award, Man of the
Year Award, American Heart Association Certificate of Appreciation, and
the Queens Borough Student Association Club Award.
Jack Thompson is happily married for 32 wonderful
years to Hortense and is the proud father of two wonderful children, Robyn
and Michael. He is especially proud of his two grandchildren, Tanya and
Christopher. Mr. Thompson's endless energy is fueled by the personal satisfaction
that he gets in being able to help people who do not know how to navigate
through the bureaucracy to have their needs addressed such as with
a senior citizen who is defrauded by an unscrupulous contractor; Veteran's
needs; Social Security and the like. The Essence of Simplicity in Human
Relations "Treat People as You Would Want to Be Treated!"
is the creed that Jack Thompson strives to adhere to daily.
He takes pride in quoting the Tunisian proverb:
"Respect yourself, you will get it back."
