NEW YORK – There are still over 1300 properties which have not filed an exemption renewal form with the NYC Department of Finance. These properties will be put on the City tax rolls.
All properties in the City should have received their tentative property assessment within the last few weeks. Organizations with property should carefully check the assessment to see if your expected exemption (full or partial) is in place. If there is a discrepancy you need to file the required form or send in a question by February 13.
Organizations can request forms, send questions, or email completed forms at commercialexemptions@finance.nyc.gov. If you have any additional questions, please contact Debra Feinberg at feinbergdebra@finance.nyc.gov, or at 212-669-8813.
The City must have the renewal forms by February 13th so that it can process the renewals in time for the final assessment roll. If you do not send in the renewal forms, once the assessment roll is finalized in May, you will owe taxes for the coming tax year of 2012-2013.
If you miss this deadline, you will have to file with the NYC Tax Commission by its deadlines in March http://www.nyc.gov/html/taxcomm/html/home/home.shtml. Doing this would enable you to protest the taxable value for the 2012-13 tax year which starts July 1, 2012.
