Once upon a time, the Church of the Brethren had a dream to open a nursing school. It was a great idea, but it didn't pan out exactly according to plan. Instead, the Health Education and Research Endowment was established to offer scholarships to qualified applicants who are members of the Church of the Brethren.
Since the fund was established in 1958, it has helped many licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and nursing graduate students further their nursing education. "It provides an opportunity for those who have a passion for caring for others – whether it be nursing in the traditional sense, or perhaps on the mission field – to further their education so they can give back," said Nancy Miner, scholarship coordinator.
And most applicants do have a strong desire to give, some even fostered through short term service projects like workcamps or Brethren Volunteer Service. "I plan to travel internationally to promote health in third-world countries through medical missions," said one recent scholarship recipient. Another said, "I am hoping my nursing degree will open up doors for me to help people and build relationships with people of all cultures."
Scholarships are available up to $2,000, and all applications are reviewed by an experienced committee of nurse educators. If you are interested in serving others with your nursing education, find out if you qualify for this great opportunity.
Instructions for applying can be found at http://www.brethren.org/nursingscholarships, and specific questions can be e-mailed to nminer@brethren.org .
Thank you for sharing your gifts!
