Reject Violence, LWF Urges Nigerian Religious and Political Leaders
Junge Urges Prayers for Work of Lutheran Churches

January 12, 2012

GENEVA – The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has strongly condemned the increasing wave of violence against citizens and places of worship in Nigeria, expressing its deep concern that such attacks undermine community co-existence and the expression of religious freedom.

"These heinous activities must be rejected by people of all religious convictions, civil society organizations and political groups," said LWF General Secretary Rev. Martin Junge in a 12 January statement.

Since Christmas, dozens have been killed in attacks apparently by the Boko Haram Islamist group, according to media reports. There has been at least one report of retaliation. The government has declared a state of emergency in the affected regions, mostly in the northern part of the country.

Junge said the recent killings threaten national peace and security in Nigeria and seriously undermine the peaceful coexistence which has been forged through patient relationship building and daily interaction over a long period.

"Senseless killing and destruction of human life and property must not continue. Bombs and guns can neither create a harmonious society nor lead to peaceful existence. Fear and suspicion are paths to self-destruction of any community," Junge said.

The LWF general secretary expressed condolences and offered prayers for those who have lost family members, while urging government, religious and traditional leaders to ensure peace and justice to stabilize local communities and the nation of Nigeria.

He called on political and religious leaders to work together to build bridges of reconciliation and an atmosphere of trust among the different groups in Nigeria. At the same time, he commended religious leaders who have rejected violent retaliation to the attacks and instead advocated dialogue and cooperation.

The LWF leader urged Muslim and Christian leaders to "rise up to their responsibilities and ensure appropriate interpretation of their sacred texts, so that misuse of any sacred texts to justify murder and destruction of human life and property ends."

Junge called on LWF member churches around the world to pray for the Lutheran Church of Nigeria and the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria and to support them as they continue to work for peaceful coexistence with their neighbors.

The LWF general secretary concluded with the plea of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Hebrews (12:14): "Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness without which no one will see the Lord."
