Sojourners Advances Muslim/Christian Engagement, Embraces Common Ground

August 29, 2011

WASHINGTON – In preparation of the 10 year anniversary of the attacks on September 11th, Sojourners releases their September/October issue surrounding Muslim/Christian engagement. Continuing a message of reconciliation and inclusion, Sojourners gives a voice to Christians who promote unity and seek understanding.

As an example of reconciliation and community engagement, http://www.sojo.net/index.cfm?action=magazine.article&issue=soj1109&article=peace-be-upon-them, Bob Smietana tells an inspirational story out of Tennessee. By coming together with local Muslims during their holy month of Ramadan, Rev. Steve Stone shows us all what it means to be a good neighbor.

Aaron D. Taylor bridges the divide between Christians and Muslim by directly engaging in holy text, creating a dialogue, http://www.sojo.net/index.cfm?action=magazine.article&issue=soj1109&article=across-the-great-divide, and starting a conversation rooted in peace, compassion, and tolerance.

Part of that message comes from Rev. Jim Wallis in an interview with Republican Rep. Walter B. Jones, http://www.sojo.net/index.cfm?action=magazine.article&issue=soj1109&article=a-convert-to-peace, (NC-3). Rev. Wallis chronicles Rep. Jones' journey from championing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to introducing clear and binding legislation for troop withdrawals.

Also in the new issue: Teachable Moments, http://www.sojo.net/index.cfm?action=magazine.article&issue=soj1109&article=teachable-moments, – Several recent seminary grads chronicle their call to social justice. Why Seminary Leadership Matters http://www.sojo.net/index.cfm?action=magazine.article&issue=soj1109&article=why-seminary-leadership-matters, – Barbara G. Wheeler details how effective and compassionate seminary leadership can transform both the clergy and the church. Drawing a Line in the (Tar) Sand, http://www.sojo.net/index.cfm?action=magazine.article&issue=soj1109&article=drawing-a-line-in-the-tar-sand, – Bill McKibben calls for civil disobedience in front of the White House surrounding President Obama's coming decision on the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

Jim Wallis is the president and CEO of Sojourners, the largest network of progressive Christians in the United States focused on the biblical call to social justice. Wallis is also author of the New York Times bestsellers God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It and The Great Awakening: Seven Ways To Change The World, Reviving Faith & Politics. His latest book is Rediscovering Values: On Wall Street, Main Street, and Your Street. Sojourners' mission is to articulate the biblical call to social justice, inspiring hope and building a movement to transform individuals, communities, the church, and the world.
