The Church of the Brethren is a Christian denomination stemming from the Brethren movement that began in 1708 in Schwarzenau, Germany, when the eight founders were baptized in the Eder River. The denomination turned 300 years old in 2008. The church is committed to continuing the work of Jesus peacefully and simply, and to living out its faith in community. It is based in the Anabaptist and Pietist faith traditions and is one of the three Peace Churches along with the Society of Friends (Quakers) and the Mennonites. The Church of the Brethren counts close to 125,000 members and 1,000 congregations across the US and Puerto Rico, and has missions and sister churches in Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Haiti, and India.
