June 11, 2009

NEW YORK – The Archdiocesan Metropolitan Youth Choir of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America will hold a Spring Concert and Silent Auction to benefit the Choir on Thursday evening June 11, at Sotheby's, NY. Archbishop Demetrios of America will be in attendance. The Choir was established on His Eminence's initiative and direction eight years ago, and stands under his archiepiscopal auspices.

The Choir is comprised of approximately 50 young Greek American children from the parishes of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in the New York metropolitan area, under the direction of choir master Maria Koleva. This upcoming performance at Sothedy's will include a special selection of folk and religious songs. Renowned Greek-American musicians such as pianist Vassilis Varvaresos and baritone Andreas Aroditis will make special guest appearances.

The Concert will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the Silent Auction commencing half an hour earlier and continuing after the completion of the performances. A reception will follow and conclude the event.

The Archdiocesan Metropolitan Youth Choir is recognized world-wide and has performed in places which include the White House for both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama during the annual March 25 Greek Independence Day Celebration; the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla. with Mario Frangoulis and the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra during Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's visit to Tarpon Springs, for the Epiphany Celebration; the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, Cyprus at the invitation of the First Lady of Cyprus; and the Zappeion Megaron in Athens, Greece.
