Fire Destroys Historic Church in Virginia

January 18, 2008

VALLEY FORGE, PA – Zion Baptist Church of Portsmith, Va., affiliated with the American Baptist Churches of the South (ABCOTS), burnt to the ground Dec. 20. The fire destroyed three other buildings adjacent to the church including the church's Vision Center where Zion members served breakfast to homeless people three days a week.

Built in the late 1800's, the church was originally established by emancipated slaves in 1865 and was the first property owned by African Americans in the city.

According to Portsmith Fire Chief, Newell Whithead, the fire was the result of an explosion caused by a buildup of trapped heat and gas in one of the church buildings.

"Within 48 hours of the fire," said Rev. Dr. Walter Parrish II, regional executive minister for ABCOTS, "ABC of the South was on site to work with the church in its transition planning." He also encouraged churches to make designated gifts to Zion Baptist through One Great Hour of Sharing.

Fletcher Parker, chairman of Zion's deacon board, said, "This is just a building. The church is within our hearts."

Church members were meeting at nearby Fourth Baptist Church until more permanent arrangements could be made for services.
