Transforming Eucharistic Practice for the Life of the World

November 8, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS – In the landmark work The Eucharist: Bodies, Bread, and Resurrection, Andrea Bieler and Luise Schottroff have brought together the best of contemporary scholarship on ritual theory and practice, early Jewish and Christian eschatology, world hunger and the global economy, the legacy of colonization, and the dynamics of torture as these have begun to change our thinking about the Eucharist.

The authors show how each of these discussions has its roots in the witness and practice of the early churches-and how the ancient meaning of this holy meal has been obscured and distorted over the course of history. They offer a dramatic new vision of the Eucharist's transformative power for our world and raise urgent challenges for the contemporary church.

A few of the topics discussed here include:
• The captivity of eschatological imagination
• The Bread of death: global food politics
• Jesus' hunger
• Eucharistic economics: abundant love, limited resources
• Sacramental permeability
• Dissent from the Omnipotence of Homo oeconomicus
• Eucharist and the body politics of the state
• Anamnesis as dangerous memory

Andrea Bieler is Associate Professor of Christian Worship at Pacific School of Religion and the author of Die Sehnsucht nach dem verlorenen Himmel ("Yearning for the Lost Heaven," 2003), and coeditor of the series Populδre Religion und Kultur ("Popular Religion and Culture").

Luise Schottroff is professor of New Testament (retired) at the University of Kassel, Germany, and is the author of numerous books and articles in New Testament and theology, including (with Silvia Schroer and Marie-Theres Wacker) Feminist Interpretation: The Bible in Women's Perspective (1998) and The Parables of Jesus (2005).
