Duncan Explores the Magic of C.S. Lewis

October 24, 2005

MINNEAPOLIS – Since The Screwtape Letters catapulted C. S. Lewis into fame in the 1940s, he has been among the world's most widely read apologists for the Christian Faith. Few writers have touched so many lives and excited so many fans. Since his death in 1963, more than 200 million copies of his books have been sold worldwide, and none has ever been out of print.

In December 2005, a full-length movie based on his beloved tale, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, will be released. In this one-of-a-kind "oral history," several people who knew C. S. Lewis explore how he emerged as one of the most powerful literary figures of his time. They tell of Lewis' early atheistic beliefs and his conversion to Christianity, his friendship with J. R. R. Tolkien and the Inklings, and his remarkable marriage to Joy Davidman.

Written as a companion to the first American documentary film on Lewis' life and work, The Magic Never Ends: The Life and Work of C.S. Lewis (Fortress Press) by John Ryan Duncan records conversations with Lewis' stepson, with the editor of several collections on Lewis, and with noted Lewis scholars as they marvel at the man who gave the world such best-selling classics as The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, Perelandra, and A Grief Observed.

The contributors to this book suggest that his popularity might be explained by the fact that he asked the hard questions about Christianity so directly and answered them with uncommon clarity and simplicity. Having known and scrutinized this remarkable man, the contributors to The Magic Never Ends help us to understand the growing interest in Lewis and his work.

John Ryan Duncan is president of The Duncan Group, Inc., a documentary film production company. His film projects have aired on PBS, HBO, Showtime, TLC, The History Channel, and The Discovery Channel. Included in his body of work is The Duncan Group/TLC co-production of Mystic Lands, a thirteen-part series that explores the great spiritual places of the world.
