A/G National Representative Interprets for the President
by Dana Edson
Kevin Babin is always a busy guy. But, when the
President of the United States needs a Sign Language Interpreter and the
Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH) wants to
give you an award, you clear your schedule.
"I'm used to juggling a lot of things,"
said Babin, national representative to Deaf Culture Ministries. "But,
these two days were very busy even for me."
Earlier this year, Babin worked as a Sign Language
Interpreter for President Bush when he was in Springfield, Missouri, addressing
concerns of the agricultural industry. So, it was only natural that Babin
would be contacted again when the President recently made a campaign swing
to rally support for U.S. Senate hopeful Jim Talent.
"This privilege to interpret for President
Bush and Deaf Americans has come along as I have focused on daily Deaf
ministry goals," Babin said. "This is the second time I've had
the privilege to interpret for our President. I am very grateful to have
been chosen for such a great honor."
The following day, Babin rushed to Osage Beach,
Missouri, to receive the "MCDHH Hearing Evaluator of the Year Award."
This prestigious award recognizes Babin's work as an evaluator of Sign
Language interpreters, as well as training them for the state of Missouri.
In the midst of these hurried activities stands
a man who is deeply honored. Yet, he is quick to point out that he'd rather
not receive the attention.
"It's not about me," Babin said. "It's
about God working in my life, serving the Deaf community and working with
them. Interpreting for President Bush and working for the MCDHH is one
way I can give back to the Deaf community, and I'm happy to do it."
