Haiti Earthquake Appeal

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude struck near Port-au-Prince, Haiti, followed 8 days later with an after shock of 6.0 magnitude. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but casualty toll estimates exceed 100,000. This is the worst earthquake to hit the area in more than 200 years. Millions people have been directly affected, including tens of thousands of American citizens who are in Haiti.

Time is of the essence for Christians to respond to the urgent needs of the Haitian people. Although the US government and other nations are responding with an aggressive effort to save lives, enormous help is need from people faith to meet the critical needs of the peoples whose homes, hospitals have been destroyed along with most of the infrastructure of Haiti. Even before the earthquake Haiti was the poorest nation in the hemisphere, now it is virtually crushed. We need to provide much-needed food, water, and sanitation supplies, saving lives and helping local communities start to rebuild.

And here in New York we have a specific concern for Haitians because of the large numbers who live in the New York City area. New York is home to more Haitians in the world outside of Haiti itself. Because of this, the Queens Federation of Churches invites you to support the Haitian people in need. Your gifts will be forwarded to Church World Service to be used to rescue and rebuild in Haiti.
